New Jersey Government Management Information Sciences Updates Feed

NJ-GMIS (Government Management Information Sciences) is an association of New Jersey government technology leaders. We provide an organizational structure, network, and activities to enhance coordination among state, county, local government and public school agencies.

We provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, information and techniques, and foster member's knowledge of hardware, software, communication, security, policy and other developments as they relate to government activities.

Our focus is solely on sharing solutions for government information technology.

NJ-GMIS is the state chapter of GMIS International which was formed in 1971 when forty local government "data processing" leaders met to explore the need for a tightly-knit organization of colleagues and associates who could work together for the common good of each other and the jurisdictions for which they worked. They perceived a need for a tightly knit organization of friends and colleagues.

Email Retention and Document Management Policies (Problems and Solutions)

At last years NJ League of Municipalities session on e-mail management, panelists spoke to an overflow room about the problems of e-mail management of municipalities of all sizes. At this years panel, the panel discussed specific practices government agencies should employ to manage their e-mail. The panel addressed best practices for governments with different e-mail technologies: large organizations with their own e-mail servers, those that download their e-mail from an internet service provider and use desktop e-mail readers like Outlook Express, and those that use online (cloud) services such as Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, AOL, or Hotmail. Attendees saw specific actions they can do to improve their e-mail management practices and manage their risks for issues such as searching, OPRA compliance, records retention rules, backups, and security.

What Elected Officials Need to Know About Technology

What do local officials need to know about technology? What risks does today's technology pose to municipalities and what can they do about it? Should they be concerned about hackers, social engineering, network security, website defacing, viruses from e-mail, or illegal use of systems by rouge employees? What can they do about it? And why do IT administrators always seem to be asking for more money?<br />

NJGMIS Announces New Vendor Members

NJGMIS is happy to announce that Cablevision Lightpath and Mitchell Humphrey have become new Vendor Members of our organization.

Technology hardware and software vendors, service providers, communications service providers all play a role in NJ-GMIS. By providing a neutral forum, NJ-GMIS allows vendors and technology coordinators educational opportunities to meet, learn, and exchange information with procurement solutions made soundly and ethically.

Vendor access to our government members through messages on our listserv and through opportunities to display at events, in addition to supporting this growing organization in its formative years, adds value to your company. Your membership is important to us. For many vendors, our government members received your announcements, seen your exhibits and appreciated your products and services. This is a very efficient and effective manner in which to reach your market and to support the ongoing effort of the only organization of government technology coordinators in the State of New Jersey.

We hope vendors continue to see the benefits of reaching NJ government technologists through NJ-GMIS. This year not only will you continue to enjoy the benefits we have offered you in the past, but NJ-GMIS will host events in conjunction with the NJ League of Municipalities and others. Hundreds of local government technology and other personnel will attend our events. We invite all vendors to join us and sign up for an exhibit tables.

We provide vendors a monthly message to our government members about your firm product announcements, white papers, training events, etc., sent by us on your behalf. Lastly, other events and meetings are planned, where it would be helpful and appropriate to have your participation.

Vendor membership is $400 year, payable to NJ-GMIS. Complete the attached form so we have your latest and accurate contact information.

NJ Government Members should pass the word around to their respective business partners and assist us in promoting this valuable service. Your assistance would help improve GMIS services to all.
