Managing technology is a major challenge for all government agencies. 1,500+ municipalities, schools, local authorities and counties in New Jersey, not to mention a myriad of state agencies, all facing the task of identifying and deploying technology that is sound, timely, and cost-effective, while meeting constantly evolving technology needs.

Typically, there is minimal coordination between agencies, as well as limited ways for agencies to communicate, share information, and spread risk.  We experience incomplete knowledge within a single agency and duplicate solutions between agencies with common borders. New Jersey Government Information Sciences (NJ-GMIS) offers the potential to learn from each other's solutions.

At times departments within a single agency have overlapping technology services resulting in excessive costs. Agencies suffer from lost or unknown joint procurement opportunities. Constant reinvention (with the associated risk of failure) impacts tax rates. NJ-GMIS helps find ways to share services and reduce costs.

The mission of NJ-GMIS is to provide an organizational structure and network with associated activities. This organization may be used by all state, county, local government agencies and educational institutions which are members in order to help them in their information and automation endeavors and with associated projects and problems.

The purpose of NJ-GMIS is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, information, and techniques.  It is to foster enhancement in hardware, software and communication developments as they relate to government activities.

Over twenty-five years ago, a group of computer leaders, realizing all of us need help from time to time, organized  GMIS International to foster sharing among all levels of government involved in our endless world of technology. Not to be confused with other user groups, GMIS focuses solely on sharing situations related to government information processing.

GMIS International has a Members Only Page offering an introduction to the various online services which are available for its members. To access the different parts of the Members Only area, you'll be required to have an ID and password. The GMIS executive Secretary is responsible for distributing these IDs to member organizations. Only the lead representative for each member organization is provided with the ID and Password. Any questions on this should be directed to the Executive Secretary.

• GEM - Published six times a year, the GEM has problem-solving articles, technical articles, job listings from member agencies and other valuable information.

• GMIS Members are invited to join the Listserv operated exclusively for our members. Ask questions and find out state of the art answers from others. • GMIS User Survey - This database consists of hardware and applications specifications from member agencies. This valuable database will be made available for inquiry and for  update.
• AWARDS Program - annual awards program for IT leaders
